If you’re looking at piano lessons in Canada, you’ll quickly come across “RCM.” Here’s a plain-English guide to what the Royal Conservatory of Music program is, how the levels work, and whether exams are right for your child.

What is the RCM?

The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) runs one of the most widely recognized music education programs in Canada. Its Certificate Program gives students a clear, structured path from beginner to advanced, with a defined curriculum for each level.

How the RCM piano levels work

The program is divided into levels that build on each other:

  • Preparatory levels for early beginners
  • Levels 1 to 10, from elementary through advanced
  • ARCT, the highest level, for very advanced pianists and teachers

Each level includes repertoire (pieces), études (technical studies), technical requirements like scales and chords, ear training, and sight-reading.

What happens in an RCM exam?

In a practical exam, students play their pieces and technical work for an examiner and complete ear-training and sight-reading tests. They receive a mark and written feedback. It’s a great way to get an outside perspective on their playing.

What about theory and history?

At higher levels, the RCM also requires theory and history exams (written exams that build musical understanding) alongside the practical piano exams. Requirements can change, so always check the latest details on the RCM website.

Does my child have to do RCM exams?

No. RCM exams are optional. They suit students who:

  • enjoy clear goals and deadlines
  • want a recognized certificate of their progress
  • are aiming for high school credits or music programs

Other students prefer to focus on playing music they love, composing, or learning pop and film songs, and that’s completely valid too. Many students mix both: following the RCM curriculum for structure, while learning fun pieces on the side.

How long does each level take?

It varies a lot by student, practice habits and lesson length. Many students take roughly a year per level in the early grades, and longer at the advanced levels. A good teacher will help set a realistic pace rather than rushing from exam to exam. Consistent practice helps most, so here’s a guide on how long to practice each day.
